The Greatest Rescue of All (Illustrated by Our Six Year Old)

Spock has taken an interest in drawing over the past year.  His notebook is filled with animals, monsters, and many colorful creations.  He recently showed Eric and I one of his latest masterpieces.

We asked him to tell us about his picture and he said the black hearts are the ones with sin and the red heart by the index finger is Jesus. He said the hand is God’s and that the red hearts in the hand are the ones He rescued.

If you have been reading my blog, then you have probably picked up on the fact that I love Jesus and follow Him.  Eric and I try to use everyday opportunities to talk about Jesus with our children.  Sometimes I wonder how much they are understanding.

Spock’s picture encouraged me because it indicated that he is beginning to comprehend.  His picture is the gospel… as told by a six year old!

  1. We have “black” hearts.  We are not born “good.”  We are born with hearts that are “deceitful” and “desperately sick” (Jeremiah 17:9).  We “sin.”  That is, we break God’s laws. Try as we might, we can never reach God’s standards on our own and that leaves us with a big problem because the consequence of sin is death (Romans 6:23).

  2. Jesus came to rescue us!  Because He made us in His image and loves us, God sent Jesus to pay the consequence of sin.  He suffered and died on a cross but defied death by rising again three days later.  Jesus is THE rescuer!  If we repent (not just being sorry because we don’t like the consequences, but longing to be changed) and ask for forgiveness and salvation, He will save us (Romans 10: 9 & 13).

  3. Jesus gives us new hearts! The Bible says that, after we are rescued, we are “new creations” (2 Corinthians 5:17). God is the “Great Physician” and He is the ultimate heart surgeon.  He begins to work in our lives and starts to make us more like Him.  Our minds and hearts are in the process of being transformed as we spend time with Him by reading and studying the Bible.

I can share this good news but, friend, only Jesus can make you see and understand.  And that’s my prayer for those of you that are reading right now.  I am praying for YOU (I may not even know your name but God does) and that Jesus will rescue you!  I am praying that you might come to know Him, the God of the Bible, and experience the greatest rescue of all!

For anyone who says yes to Jesus, For anyone who believes what Jesus said, For anyone who will just reach out to take it, Then God will give them this wonderful gift: To be born into a whole new Life, To be who they really are, Who God always made them to be – Their own true selves – God’s dear child.

Paraphrase of John 1:12-13 (Jesus Storybook Bible)
