If Momma Ain’t Happy…

There is truth to the saying, “If Momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.”

As a mother, I have come to the realization that the tone of our home is often set by me.  It’s happened too many times to count.  So much so that I’ve taken notice of it frequently.  Sadly, it’s not often a good thing.

If Momma responds in a harsh tone, I notice my husband’s tone follows suit… even if he was in a good mood.  If Momma is stressed and short, my children’s words and actions mimic mine.

It’s been a sullen observation for me, and has required honest reflection and an awareness that change is needed. I have been praying that God would transform me in this area.  My desire is for our home to be a place where gentleness, patience, and kindness are abundant. I can’t expect it from anyone else in our family before starting with my own heart.

Though I can have the best of intentions, it is God’s Word that brings about lasting change. Last week, I spent several days praying that God would give me a verse to memorize and start practicing. I needed it to be something that will help me guard my mouth, change my tone, and create a new atmosphere for our home.

One morning I woke up early and sat in the quiet of our living room.  I held my Bible, still thinking about finding a verse.  Memory work is a struggle for me so I whipped out my phone and searched for the “soft answer” verse via Pinterest.  Maybe I could find a cute graphic with the verse.  Got it.  Then I saw the picture right next to it that contained this verse, “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue” (Proverbs 31:26).  Both verses echoed what I needed to start asking for and who I desire to become.

I’ve written them down in strategic spots where they will be seen frequently.  I’m committing to memorize them.  And, because the more I see them the better, they are even on the lock screen of my phone. (Feel free to download this picture that this amateur designed for your phone background.)

Fellow Moms, we have incredible influence over our homes and families!  The atmosphere of our home is often a direct reflection of us.  Maybe you have been struggling and don’t like what you see.  If so, you’re not alone! There is hope if we will humble ourselves and ask God to change us from the inside out.

“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger…

She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.”

Proverbs 15:1, 31:26
